The Badgoi Pass, also known as the Utror Pass, is an ancient mountain route connecting the Upper Swat Valley (in Bahrain Tehsil of Swat District) with the Dir Upper District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. For centuries, this rugged yet scenic passage has served as a vital link between the towns of Thall and Kalam, a journey that typically takes around three to four hours.
Each year, thousands of adventure seekers and
nature lovers traverse this legendary route to explore the unmatched beauty of Kumrat Valley and Kalam Valley. Travelers either start their journey from
Kalam to visit Kumrat, or from Kumrat to discover the breathtaking landscapes
of Utror, Kalam, Mahodand Lake, Bahrain,
and Madyan via the Badgoi Pass.
A
Journey Through Nature’s Majesty
Crossing the Badgoi Pass offers visitors a
rare opportunity to experience not only the charm of Kumrat Valley but also the mesmerizing surroundings of
Swat. The entire route is filled with lush meadows, snow-capped peaks, and
crystal-clear streams — making it a dream come true for photographers,
trekkers, and adventure enthusiasts alike.
However, travelers should note that the pass
remains closed from November to April
due to heavy snowfall. The road becomes accessible only during the summer months (May to October), when the
snow melts and the weather turns pleasant.
Because the road conditions are quite rough
and steep, it is highly recommended to
use a 4x4 jeep or hire a local driver familiar with the terrain to
ensure a safe journey.
How to
Reach Kumrat Valley via Badgoi Pass
To reach Kumrat Valley through Badgoi Pass, start your journey
from Kalam and make your way to Utror, which serves as the gateway to
the pass. From Utror, ask the locals about the road leading to Badgoi Pass —
they are always friendly and willing to guide visitors.
As you ascend the winding mountain road,
you’ll pass through stunning locations such as Desht-e-Laila, Chechelo,
and Lamin, before reaching Lamoti, the fifth village of Dir
Kohistan.
From Lamoti, heading westward will take you toward the scenic Jahaz Banda meadows, while continuing northward will bring you to Thall Bazaar — the last village of Dir
Kohistan and the base camp for Kumrat
Valley.
At Thall, travelers will find basic amenities,
guesthouses, and local shops before moving onward to the pristine Kumrat Valley, one of Pakistan’s most
beautiful and untouched travel destinations.
